Officer Jason Cope

Jason Cope was born and raised in Merced, California. He played water polo, golf, and swam freestyle and backstroke on the swim team for a high school in Merced.   These sports were more than just sports, this was a time to be on a team with close friends and work on team goals.  Following graduation of high school, he joined the United States Army.

Whenever he hears people complaining about the heat in Merced, he remembers being in bootcamp on a hot Oklahoma summer day.  While serving in the Army, Jason Cope deployed to Kosovo which provided him with a unique first-hand perspective of third world, war-torn communities.  Upon returning to the United States, he had a new appreciation for clean water, safe neighborhoods, and buildings with walls and roofs.

After discharging from the Army, Jason Cope decided to attend a local police academy after being exposed to the exciting world of law enforcement from his friends. He went on a ride-a-long with UCMPD Sergeant Jason Jacklitsch.  The comradery exhibited by those friends was similar to that of being in the military.  He joined the police academy soon after.

Jason Cope was hired by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office. He served in various assignments such as the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, Dive Rescue and Recovery Team, Sheriff’s Tactical and Reconnaissance (STAR) Team, Merced-Mariposa High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force Agent, Field Training Officer (FTO) and Detective.  He utilizes his knowledge from the Drug Task force to provide meaningful insight to students about the dangers of drugs and addiction.  He fears students may get addicted to pills and then progress to heroin.  It is important for him to speak to the reality of addiction with students.

Although each assignment was different, his favorite was the SWAT team.  This allowed him to be a part of a fast-paced team that must rely on every member of the team to be safe and successful.  Jason Cope was also an instructor in chemical agent and less lethal munitions.  The first time he was pepper sprayed, he learned it was one of the most painful things he encountered.

Officer Cope recognized he wanted to pursue higher education as his career progressed.  He obtained his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  This provided him with new insight on different types of policing models.  He can relate to students when they are stressed about upcoming papers and finals.

In 2018, Jason Cope decided to join the UC Merced Police Department as a patrol officer.  He has assisted with various investigations and has participated in outreach events on campus.  He enjoys foot patrol and speaking to students about the variety of issues they face.  His favorite scripture is, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.”  -Matthew 5:9
